The strategic position of the Polcenigo area and its natural resources have made Polcenigo a suitable place for human settlements since prehistoric times. The archaeological finds of Palù testify to the presence of a village of stilt houses, dating back to the Neolithic period, which could count on the abundance of water, plants and wild animals supplied in large quantities by the wetland area of Palù and the nearby mountains. Finds from the Iron Age (I-II millennium BC) have also revealed the existence of a necropolis at the foot of the Colle di San Floriano, in San Giovanni.
