    The Omaha Beach monument Les Braves is located in the middle of Omaha Beach.

    The plaque with an explanation about the monument is on the boulevard of Omaha Beach.

    Caption from the maker of the monument:

    I created this to honor the courage of these people:

    Sons, husbands and fathers, who endangered and often sacrificed their lives in the hope of freeing the French.

    Les Braves consists of three elements:

    => The wings of hope

    So that the strength that these men carried on June 6, 1944 will continue to inspire us and remind us that together it is always possible to change the future.

    => Rise, freedom!

    So that the example of those who rose up against barbarism will help us to stand strong against all forms of inhumanity.

    => The wings of brotherhood

    So that this wave of brotherhood always reminds us of our responsibility towards others and ourselves.

    On June 6, 1944, these men were more than soldiers, they were our brothers.

      Erected on the sand of Omaha Beach, in homage to the 35,000 allied soldiers who landed there on June 6, 1944, and to the 3,000 victims, dead, missing and wounded on the evening of D-Day, the monument “The Braves”, work of the sculptor Anilore Banon, whose steel sails stand at the foot of the steps of the Signal monument in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, was inaugurated on June 5, 2004, on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the landing of Normandy.
      This monumental ensemble, produced in the workshops of Constructions Mécaniques de Cherbourg, with a length of 15 meters and a weight of 15 tonnes, is composed of three groups, sculpted in steel and stainless steel, resting on a base of concrete. In the center, raised towards the sky, the feet bathed by the ebb and flow of the sea, “Debout la liberté”, whose summit culminates 9 meters above the ground, celebrates the courage of the men who rise to face and defeat barbarism and totalitarianism. To his left, “the wings of fraternity” commemorate the commitment of those who fight for the establishment and respect of universal equality of human rights. To his right, completing the whole, “the wings of hope”, illustrate the commitment of those who, even today, continue the fight for democracy.

      An ephemeral work, built on the public maritime domain, benefiting from a temporary authorization granted by the Calvados prefecture expiring on October 31, 2004, “Les Braves” was set to disappear come fall. Following a request made in September 2004 by the mayor of the town of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, following the petition “We must save the Brave!” » launched the same year, a prefectural decree dated April 23, 2010 finally authorized the maintenance of the monument, on its current location, for a period of nine renewable years.
