In the years 1869 to 1879, the Catholic community in Zweibrücken had a neo-Gothic hall church with a low crossing tower and a free-standing bell tower built according to plans by Franz Jakob Schmitt.

This church building was not spared during the bombing on Black Wednesday, as the day on which the old town of Zweibrücken was reduced to rubble and ash was called. Part of the building was badly damaged by a bomb that fell on the roof and pierced it. Unfortunately, the rest of the church was demolished after the war, although according to many citizens of Zweibrücken it could have been rebuilt.

In 1949 the construction of the flat-roofed pillar hall, which was reopened on September 17, 1950, began at the same location based on the designs of Albert Boßlet. Nine years after the completion of the new Holy Cross Church, the free-standing bell tower with a pyramid roof was built.

The Holy Cross Church is a Catholic parish church in Zweibrücken. Alongside the Alexanderskirche (built 1493-1510) and the Karlskirche (1708-1711), it is the third oldest church building in the city center of Zweibrücken in terms of architectural history. The church is listed in the register of cultural monuments of the district-free city of Zweibrücken.

The building was built between 1869 and 1879 according to plans by Franz Jakob Schmitt from Mainz as a cruciform hall church with a crossing tower in the neo-Gothic style. Towards the end of World War II, the church was destroyed in a bomb attack on March 14, 1945. Only parts of the outer walls remained standing. The church was rebuilt on the old foundations in 1949/50 as a flat-roofed pillared hall and extended by 16 meters to the west. Albert Boßlet was responsible for the design of the reconstruction. On September 17, 1950, the new church was consecrated. A striking feature is the free-standing bell tower with a pyramid roof from 1959.
