1. **Filling the kiln:** Limestone, usually in the form of large chunks, is loaded into the lime kiln. Sometimes other material, such as coal or charcoal, is also added to aid the combustion process.
2. **Heating:** The limestone is heated to very high temperatures, often above 900 degrees Celsius. This process is known as calcination.
3. **Decomposition of Limestone:** At these high temperatures, the limestone decomposes into calcium oxide (slaked lime) and carbon dioxide gas.
