In the past, significant parts of the floodplain forest south of Leipzig were destroyed for the purpose of open-cast lignite mining. The lowering of the groundwater, which was necessary during lignite mining, also led to the further drying out of the forest area. Originally, it was even planned to excavate the forest up to Richard-Lehmann-Straße in order to extract the lignite underneath. Fortunately, the successful protests of the citizens' initiative "Stop Cospuden 1990" led to the cessation of mining in 1992.
