Series - Three families survived a series of accidents unscathed. Small church near Memhölz on Lake Niedersonthofner
They often stand alone on the side of the road, are usually closed and only rarely open on sacred occasions: we are talking about small house or community chapels. They sometimes house artistic treasures and there are interesting stories surrounding their creation. In a series we present different chapels.
Niedersonthofen A woman from Kempten who was cured of cancer donated two putti, many people who were tormented by life have already put a note behind the broad-cloaked Mother of God and thousands of users of the circular path around Lake Niedersonthofen hold silent contemplation every year: We are talking about the one that was inaugurated in 2000 Guardian angel chapel at the island campsite near Memhölz.
As you enter, you will notice the large guardian angel painted by artist Arnulf Heimhofer on the opposite west side - the nearby lake is depicted underneath and the foothills of the Alps behind it. “Many who pray, meditate or simply think about their lives here then sit down on the wooden bench on the south side,” says Max Bertele.
Especially in winter, athletes on the cross-country ski run would like to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy not only the peace and tranquility but also a few warming rays of sunshine on the bench. After all, the chapel is open during daylight hours all year round, says Bertele.
Blessing in disguise
What were the motives behind the construction of the chapel? “There were a number of accidents in the Bertele, Musch and Vogler families that got off very lightly,” says Rudolf Vogler. It was also only with a lot of luck that we survived some situations without injury.
In any case, that was reason enough for the three families to commemorate the guardian angels in the form of a chapel. Spiritual Councilor Lorenz Adelwart was there to advise and the saying above the Heimhofer portrait comes from him: “God commands his angels to protect you in all your ways”. The summer residence of the Kempten prince abbots once stood on the site of the Guardian Angel Chapel - the castle was built around 1650 and demolished again in 1840. Max Bertele had played in the remaining basement rooms as a little boy before worried parents had the underground “play areas” filled in. (mr)
