The new building complex of the Silesian Museum, located on the site of the former "Katowice" Coal Mine, together with other institutions being established here, creates the Culture Zone, a new center of the city's cultural life. The modern structure designed by the Austrian studio Riegler Riewe Architekten from Graz, assumes the maximum use of the space below the ground, and thus little interference in the post-industrial landscape.

The main part of the architectural complex of the Silesian Museum is a seven-story building with three levels underground.

On the P-2 floor there is a gallery of Polish art 1800-1945 and the one after 1945, a gallery of non-professional art, while on the P-4 floor: "The light of history. Upper Silesia through history", a gallery of Silesian sacred art, "Laboratory of theater spaces - past in the present and temporary exhibitions.
