The Lac de Bairon reservoir at the crest of the Canal des Ardennes is partly responsible for the canal's water supply. To the west, a set of locks leads down into the Aisne valley, to the east the canal runs first through the tunnel of Saint-Aignan and then down into the Meuse valley.
