It marks a historic route that allowed crossing the mountain. In the 18th and 19th centuries, a coaching inn was installed there. After the steep climb, the horses of the stagecoaches linking Saint-Gervais-sur-Mare to Lacaune could thus be replaced by fresh horses. After the great effort it took you to climb up here, you too can take a breather in the rest area which offers a panorama of the surroundings.
The Col de la Croix de Mounis has been crossed 3 times by the Tour de France, being classified in 2nd or 3rd category depending on the year.
