The Church of the Virgin Mary (Greek: Panagia Keriotissa) is the heart of the mountain village of Keri and is considered one of the most important religious sites on Zakynthos.
According to legend, a shepherd found a glittering object in the bushes in the early 17th century. He discovered a slightly burnt icon of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus and Saint Nicholas. Although he brought it to the village, the icon returned to the place of its discovery the next day as if by a ghost hand, whereupon the church was erected there.
