The municipality of Curral das Freiras (literally: nun's stable) got its name from "Freiras" (nuns) who had to retreat there in 1560 to escape from the French pirates who had attacked the island and plundered the city of Funchal.

The climb from Nun's Valley to the Eira do Serrado viewpoint is not long (2.5 km), but there is almost 400 meters in altitude to overcome. Not a really difficult route, but you do need fitness.
