You can cross the Curral das Freiras completely if you descend from the Boca da Corrida via the Boca do Cerco into the valley and then climb back up to the Eira do Serrado in a short and brisk manner. It's more demanding in terms of fitness, but it's beautiful and can be done entirely by public bus (although not every bus from C.d.Freiras to Funchal goes via the E.d.Serrado, please check; there's usually a bus around 5 in the afternoon during the week). If you miss the bus back, you'll have to take a taxi or go back down the slope to the main road (not recommended, as the road to Eira d.S. is relatively busy).
