This monumental structure was inaugurated in 1925 by King Emmanuel III. When there is a lot of rain in the mountains, the canals fill up. The machines still work today to move water from the canals into the Rhine River and keep the land dry. You can visit the museum by booking a guided tour, the information can be found here on the website:
