Anhalt castle ruins, stamp 197 of the Harz hiking pin, towering high above the Selketal. We came here from the Forsthaus Wilhelmshof.

The castle's origins are not entirely clear. Count Otto the Rich probably built it around 1100. It was destroyed as early as 1140, but rebuilt by Albert the Bear starting in 1146. We love the tranquility and the view of the Selke Valley from up here. The grounds of Anhalt Castle are open to the public at all times.

The excavated foundations and cellar rooms lead to the conclusion that the former castle complex and its history are of great importance for the identity of Saxony-Anhalt and that its remains are an indispensable cultural heritage of the state.
