In 1782 the church dedicated to the apostles Simon and Judas was built in Altengesees.
Its organ was completed just six years after the church was built. The organ builder was Christian August Gerhard (1745 - 1817), a son of Justinus Ehrenfried Gerhard, who worked in Lindig near Kahla and had been a student of Gottfried Silbermann. This organ stands in the direct tradition of one of the most important organ builders in Germany. It is a document of the quality, diversity and aesthetics of the organ landscape in Thuringia in the 18th century.
