The mining shaft located in the Firnskuppe (Sagenschacht) is referred to in North Hessian mythology as always to be avoided "way into the underworld". According to a legend, a shepherd with his entire flock of sheep is said to have plunged into it and disappeared into it forever and ever. According to another story, a jealous stable-lad slain a grenadier of the local garrison and threw it into the shaft. (Source Wikipedia)
