The Arc de Triomphe in Montpellier is a gate built to the glory of King Louis XIV, on his orders. The chosen site was one of the highest points of the city, Mount Peyrou. The work is 15 meters high and its opening is 7 meters high. The arch dates from 1691 and was designed by the architect François II d'Orbay, a pupil of Mansart. It has similarities with the Porte Saint Martin in Paris: the builder was inspired by it, although in smaller dimensions. It was previously part of the city's fortifications. Today, we go through the door to enter the Place du Peyrou. The monument was built after the battles led by Louis XIV to expand the territory, which lasted 40 years. The Latin inscription engraved in the stone reminds us: ''Louis the Great, whose reign lasted seventy-two years, brought peace on land and sea after separating, containing and attaching himself to allied peoples in a forty year war.
It is a good meeting point if you are leaving or arriving in the center of Montpellier.
It adjoins the Peyrou gardens, a well-known place to walk in Montpellier.
