Jacob Cats (1577-1660), statesman and poet, was born and raised in Zeeland. In his birthplace Brouwershaven he has been honored with a statue since 1829.

The Netherlands has never been a country of statues. However, in the nineteenth century, when the new Kingdom of the Netherlands sought guidance in a romantically colored past, statues were erected here and there. The statue of Jacob Cats in Brouwershaven was then the third statue in our country. Erasmus (Rotterdam, 1622) and Laurens Janszoon Coster (Haarlem, 1723) were the only ones who preceded Cats.
In 1824, the Schouwen department of the Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen took the initiative to place a statue in the birthplace of the statesman-poet. The Ghent sculptor Philippe Parmentier was commissioned. He made a full-length statue in white stone (known by the name of 'pierre de Rochefort'). On October 21, 1829, the first stone was laid in the middle of the Markt. The statue was solemnly inaugurated on December 11. In 1884 the statue of Cats was moved to another place on the Markt. In 2010, the year in which the 350th birthday of Cats was commemorated, the old statue was restored and moved to the Grote of Sint-Nicolaaskerk. There is now a new bronze cast of the statue on the Markt in Brouwershaven.
