The Elisabethenstein is in the Vortaunus and in the Taunus Nature Park.
The rock from which the Elisabethenstein is made, a quartz-cemented sandstone, comes from the Lower Devonian, i. H. from a time about 400 million years ago. The lithostratigraphic unit in question is called Taunus quartzite. This unit appears in many places on the southern edge of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, also in the form of other rock groups in the vicinity of the Elisabethenstein, e.g. B. the marble stone and the gold mine rock group. All of these rocks were naturally carved out of the subsoil during the Quaternary period due to the sandstone's relatively high erosion resistance.

When expanding the Elisabethenschneise in 1822, the Elisabethenstein had to be partially blown up.

The stone is named after Landgravine Elisabeth, the wife of Friedrich VI. Before that it was called Eschbachstein.
