The Demag crane, which has been on the Monbagsee on Opladener Strasse since 1928, handled around 10 tons of gravel and sand up until the 1980s. Funding was discontinued at the end of 1998, and four years later the crane was entered in the city's list of monuments as an “important industrial monument”. The gravel pit on Opladener Strasse developed into a lake almost seventy hectares in size and up to 22 meters deep.
