There is a lot of construction going on around the marina. In around 2024 the entire port will be surrounded by apartments, shops and restaurants. The Blauwestad harbor district will thus become a lively city harbor for residents and visitors.

The Pieter Smit Bridge is a real eye-catcher in the landscape. The bridge forms a direct connection between Winschoten and Blauwestad for cyclists and pedestrians. This means that residents of the Blauwestad area can easily and quickly reach amenities in Winschoten, such as schools and shops. And conversely, the leisure facilities around the Oldambtmeer can also be reached quickly from Winschoten. When it opens in early 2021, the Pieter Smit Bridge will be the longest walking and cycling bridge in Europe.
