The origins of today's city forest go back to purchases and transfers of land from former monastic property and can be traced back to the year 1220. Administration was carried out from 1644 by the first forestry offices set up by Duke Ernst the Pious and, after frequent changes in area and structure, remained as ducal forestry offices until the merger of the Thuringian small states to form the state of Thuringia.
