The Monastery Old Town was a Franciscan monastery.
Consecrated to Maria Immaculata, the monastery was founded on 19 July 1649 by the prince-abbot Joachim von Gravenegg of Fulda. It was first a hospice and from 1655 a convent of the Thuringian Observant Province of St. Elisabeth. Wolfgang Quast († 1674), one of the founding fathers, authored, supplemented later by Father Caspar Liebler, a chronicle of the first decades of the monastery. In 1664 the construction of the convent was completed, and in 1670 the monastery church was inaugurated. The church was only 28 years old when it burned down on 18 December 1698, set on fire by a lightning strike. Quickly a new church was built. Already on the day of 1700, the present church was inaugurated by the auxiliary bishop of Mainz in Erfurt, Jakobus Sennft. The architect and master builder was the Franciscan brother Anthonius Peyer, who was highly esteemed in the Fulda region and came from Tyrol. Peyer was in 1699 the master builder of the new monastery church in Hammelburg, 1700 also worked at the provost Blankenau, 1701 at the Probstei Thulba and 1702-1704 at the Domdechanei Fulda, before he died on October 25, 1704 at the age of only 31 years. From the secularization the monastery old town was spared. In 1837 it passed to the Bavarian Franciscan Province. From 1926 to 1971, a seminary of the Franciscans was housed in the monastery buildings, then until July 1976 a police school. Since 1980, the Bavarian Music Academy has been using part of the rooms of the monastery. The Franciscans left due to staff shortage Hammelburg in November 2014.

What does it mean with the clue that the foundation at this point reaches 16 shoes deep? The date is 1610, but the monastery was not built until 1649. Was there a predecessor? Or did the builders of the Thirty Years War intervene? Or did the stone come from another place and was it recycled here?

The Hammelburgers were very happy to attend the Sunday service in the morning, as this could be combined very well with a walk through nature, which is unfortunately no longer possible.
