The Engelburg was built around 1224 by Count Frederic II von Ferette to control access to the Thur Valley. A few centuries later - during the Thirty Years' War - the fortress was badly damaged and demolished in 1673 on the orders of Louis XIV, as it was no longer of strategic interest. The main tower crumbled into several pieces. The largest piece in the form of a disk fell on its side and faces the town of Thann: the "witch's eye" seems to fix the roofs of the village and the horizon.
The structure can now be reached in about 20 minutes via a steep staircase or a forty-minute walk through the vineyard. The effort is rewarded by an unobstructed view over the valley, the collegiate church and the town of Thann.
