The first news of the foundation of the monastery comes to us from the twelfth century, where three anchorites from different communities decided to make a single monastery. Its construction dates back to the year 1132.

Centuries ago, a monumental monastery was built in Oia on the rugged and rocky coast between Baiona and A Guarda, with a large church dedicated to Santa María. It is one of the few examples of an abbey by the sea in Galicia, since the few that existed would soon retire to inland places, less exposed to the attacks of pirates and corsairs who devastated the Galician coast for several centuries.

This Romanesque-style church has a privileged position facing the sea and the surrounding hills. In addition to the church, the enclosure includes several patios, a cellar, a parade ground, etc. Guided tours can be made by booking through the monastery website.
