You might think a dragon is slithering from one bank to the other. But what you see here isn't a creature straight out of a fantasy novel, but a wooden pedestrian bridge connecting the two banks of the Main-Danube Canal. At 193 meters long, it can proudly claim to be one of the longest wooden bridges in Europe.

From the bridge, beautiful views of Essing, the Randeck Castle ruins, and the river landscape are guaranteed. And with a little luck, a ship might pass under the bridge just as you're standing on the bridge enjoying the view.

On the other side are the Klausen Caves, part of the Altmühl Valley Archaeological Park, which served as Neanderthal dwellings.

During the construction of the Main-Danube Canal, the crossing to the other bank was interrupted. Since things couldn't stay that way, the construction company
Rhein-Main-Donau AG had to come up with something. The plan was to build a nearly 200-meter-long bridge in the unique landscape of the Altmühl Valley.

In the end, the unusual bridge design by architect
Richard Johann Dietrich was chosen, characterized by its exceptional lightness
    and curved lines.

After seven years of planning and development, and with the help of engineering and modern timber construction technology, the unusual bridge structure was realized.

The bridge stands out from afar due to its curious construction. At 193 meters long, the "Tatzlwurm" suspension bridge construction is one of the longest wooden bridges in Europe and connects the two sides of the Essing valley. Walk over it, cyclists have to get off and enjoy the gentle swing. You should definitely give yourself this experience, great.

The wooden bridge "Tatzlwurm" is 193 meters long and is the second longest wooden bridge in Europe. It connects the two sides of the valley of Essing, which is idyllically situated in the Altmühl valley. From the bridge you have a great view of the Essing rock massif and the Randeck castle ruins, which tower high above the town.
