The town of Borgarnes is historically significant and plays a major role in the famous Egil's Saga. Egill Skallagrímsson – called Egil – is the main character of this saga. In Borgarnes, you can follow Egil's tracks in the Settlement Center (Landnámssetur / The Settlement Center) in a vivid, multimedia way. There is also an exhibition here on the history of the settlement of Iceland – the so-called Landnahme.
In memory of the saga hero Egill, all streets in the region have been named after characters from Egil's Saga.

This monument "Brákin" in remembrance of Þorgerður Brák and her ill fate. She had been the nanny and foster-mother to Egill the son of Skalla-Grímur and is described as big and strong as a man and skilled in magical arts.
