The long portico that connects the city to the distant church of the Madonna del Popolo or S. Maria in Aula Regia is the last of the large buildings built in the first half of the seventeenth century.
    ...
Built between the end of 1647 and the following spring, it is a "street covered by a long order of porticoes which protect passengers from the Tramontana". The western end of the town, where the Capuchin sanctuary is located, was in fact an isolated place, totally open to the valleys, with no inhabited area, impassable in summer due to the heat and in winter due to the cold winds. It is a spectacular urban intervention that has visually doubled the extension of the city, with an effect accentuated by the reflection on the water of the canals.

It was built at the behest of Cardinal Giovanni Stefano Donghi as a thank you to the Virgin for having held back the waters of the Po di Primaro which threatened the ruin of the city. A succession of 142 arches accompanies the prayers and steps of the faithful towards the distant sanctuary which houses the thaumaturgical image of the Madonna del Popolo.

The sanctuary is dedicated to the venerated image of Santa Maria in the Aula Regia. The presence of this religious building is attested in the 10th century when the monastery already boasted an important role.
