The founder Gerrit Jan Barkmeijer (Berkmeijer) was born in Neuenhaus (D) in 1780. Around 1810, during the French occupation, many craftsmen emigrated from Germany to the (North) Netherlands, partly to avoid conscription. He first lives in Sappemeer, where he learns the trade of ship carpenter. He married Kunje Rijskamp in 1813 and settled in Nietap. The shipyard was founded in 1850. Other family members are also active in various places, see ssrp.nl/netwerk/werpen/scheepswerf-barkmeijer
In 2018, the company went bankrupt and was able to restart through a deal with Bodewes.
