The first mention of a chapel in Nußdorf, as a branch of Herzogenburg, was in 1284. In 1324 Wernhard von Nußdorf donated the parish. It was incorporated into the Herzogenburg Abbey.

In the year the parish was founded, Wernhart von Nußdorf and his wife Agnes had a church built with a two-aisled nave and ribbed vaulting, which received St. John the Baptist (June 24) as parish patron.

Although it is not a fortified church in the traditional sense, it was constructed extremely well and can be regarded as a remarkable late Gothic building.
