Burial Hill is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been used for burials since the 1620s. The Pilgrims built their first fort and meeting house on this hill, which eventually turned into a burying ground as the settlement grew. Burial Hill is the resting place of many of the Mayflower Pilgrims, including Governor William Bradford, and William and Mary Brewster. The oldest known stone marker on Burial Hill is Edward Gray's, dated 1681; the first grave markers were carved wood, and did not survive. As you explore the burial ground, please be quiet and respectful, and please do not touch the grave markers, they are valuable historic artifacts.
