You can see from the canals in the Oranjezon nature reserve, such as this one, that this place used to be used as a water extraction area. This area has now been 'retired', but in an emergency Oranjezon can provide the whole of Walcheren with clean drinking water within 24 hours.

In 1889 the municipality of Middelburg bought up part of this dune area in order to obtain clean drinking water. This hasn't happened since 1995, but in an emergency, Oranjezon can supply all of Walcheren with clean drinking water within 24 hours.
