According to legend, the planting of a vineyard can be traced back to Charlemagne, who is said to have observed from his palace in Ingelheim that the snow on the Johannisberg was the first to melt. In 772, a donation of Geisenheim lands to the Fulda Abbey was documented. In 817 the monks exchanged the facilities with Ludwig the Pious for lands in the Wetterau.
