The construction of the Castello Svevo di Bari (literally: Swabian Castle) was begun in 1131-1132 on the orders of Roger "the Norman". The castle stands on the remains of a Byzantine fortress from the 11th century and was often damaged and rebuilt in the course of time. It even served once as a prison. Today there is a museum where changing exhibitions are shown.
