Perched on a granite cliff, the church of Santo Stefano dominates the entrance to the Val di Genova.
The first evidence of the existence of the church dates back to 1244. In 1530 it was restructured by building the external staircase on the valley side, which partially destroyed some of the frescoes dated 1519.
The painter Simone Baschenia, the same who performed the famous macabre dance on the walls of the main church of Carisolo, further downstream, frescoed the entire church of Santo Stefano, internally and externally. The most important fresco is the one present inside the church, from 1534 depicting Charlemagne attending the baptism of a catechumen carried out by Papa Urbano I.
