The lower gate is two-storey and has a steep hipped roof with a crowning lantern. It dates from the late Middle Ages and was baroqueized in 1785. The half-timbered gatehouse adjoins the gate building, at which every third-party vehicle had to pay paving duty until 1935. It is the only gate guard house still in existence in Merkendorf. However, today's building is a replica of the original, which had to be demolished in 1980 due to dilapidation. It was rebuilt true to the original. In it, as in the lower gate, there is an apartment.
