idyllically away from the coffee places surrounded by great half-timbered houses

The late medieval half-timbering is typical of the Old Town Hall, which dates from 1432. The formerly open ground floor served as a sales hall for the butchers. The council chamber and the offices were in the upper rooms. The bakers had their stalls in the arcades of the New Town Hall from 1503, while the upper rooms housed offices and the weavers' showroom, where the quality of the woven fustian was determined. The New Town Hall had to be placed on 1,800 oak piles during construction because the subsoil was muddy due to the high groundwater level. Parts of the city administration are now housed in both town halls and connected with a glass intermediate structure.
