The Inner City Moat in Augsburg is a historic watercourse that once served as part of the medieval city fortifications. It branches off from the city moat at the Vogeltor and runs along the Upper and Lower Moat. It rejoins the Outer City Moat at the thermal power station on Franziskanergasse.
Originally designed to protect the city from attackers, the Inner City Moat today plays an important role in Augsburg's water management system, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. There are several historic structures along its course, including the Lower Wellworks, a drinking water works from the early 16th century. It consists of the Lower Well Tower, the Pump House and a water crossing where the Inner City Moat is led over the city stream.
The Inner City Moat is not only a technical monument, but also an ecologically valuable habitat. The canals in Augsburg's city center are used by numerous animal and plant species to get into the city from the surrounding area and to colonize new habitats. Even beavers, kingfishers and dragonflies can be observed in the middle of the city.
For anglers, the inner city moat offers a variety of fish species, including brown trout, pike and rainbow trout. The Lech fishing association in Augsburg has been managing the inner and outer city moat since 1958 and also offers guest tickets for interested anglers.
A special place on the inner city moat is the herb garden at the Red Gate. It was created in 1983 based on a historical model on the occasion of Augsburg's 2000th anniversary. The garden, which is open to the public, consists of various beds with useful herbs that can be tried and taken home in normal household quantities. Numerous benches invite you to linger and relax.
The Inner City Moat is therefore an important testimony to Augsburg's city history and a lively part of urban life that combines history, nature and leisure opportunities.
