Hallig Hooge has no fresh water springs. That is why rainwater used to be collected on the terp as drinking water: the rainwater from the roofs was collected for the people's wells, that from the terp for the animals in Fethingen. Most of the time the water was colored yellowish-brown by the thatched roofs of the Hallig houses. The quality of the drinking water often left a lot to be desired. The drinking water problem was only solved in 1970, with the construction of a drinking water pipeline from the mainland to Hallig Hooge.
