Seagull sculpture in Veddel. It looks proud and majestic. With its wings spread and its head raised, the "messenger of the sea wind" greets all travelers who travel over the Norderelbbrücken towards the center of Hamburg.

The seagull sculpture has a history that goes back almost 130 years: it originally sat on the neo-Gothic brick and sandstone portal of the so-called New Norderelbbrücken, built between 1884 and 1887.

It was demolished at the end of the 1950s to widen the bridge. This meant that the seagull lost its home.

Near the North Elbe in Veddel, a seagull flies with outstretched wings onto a towering wooden beam. This would be an everyday situation in the port area of the Hanseatic city if it weren't for a larger-than-life sculpture made of copper sheet. The naturally designed animal has been greeting passing motorists heading north since the mid-1980s.

      Data on the work:
Johannes Walther: Seagull (1985, copper sheet on wooden beam)
      Veddeler Brueckenstrasse, 20539 Hamburg (Veddel)
