Work on the small hermitage was completed in 1573, a date that is engraved on the stone of the portal. It was the headquarters of the oldest brotherhood that has been dated in Campo de Criptana, the Brotherhood of Veracruz (1568) which later became known as the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of the Column and the Descent of Our Lord as it is in procession during Holy Week Cryptanian today.
