The Landgrave's Castle Butzbach was originally a city castle of the Lords of Falkenstein. However, today's excavations in the castle area have shown that there was probably a small ring-shaped moated castle on the site as early as around 1200.

The Falkenstein family expanded the property around 1390, then it was the seat of the von Eppstein-Königstein family, the Archbishop of Mainz, and finally the Landgrave's Hessian castle. Around 1500 another castle was built by the Landgraves of Hesse. Landgrave Philipp von Hessen-Butzbach (1609-1643) rebuilt the castle, which had partially burned down in 1603, as a stately residence.

Since 1818 it was converted into a barracks and used as such until the US armed forces left in 1991. As a result of this use, the landgrave's castle was preserved in its substance as a "shell", but lost what made up its castle character: the high towers, the dwellings with the decorative gables, its colorful paintwork and of course the entire once magnificent interior.

In 1998-99 most of the barracks on the palace grounds were demolished and in 2002 the city administration finally moved into the south and east wings. In 2002, a small part of the former castle garden was recreated in its former symmetry as a historical time window.

Every year in summer, the nationally known and very popular open-air cinema takes place in the inner courtyard of the castle.
