The district of Horstwalde is located on the northwest side of the Baruth glacial valley and was founded by the Baruth rulers in 1720 as a colony village with the name "Steilberg". The first documentary mention was in 1768 with the name "Busch-Neuhof", it was not until 1939 that this young settlement was renamed Horstwalde.

Around 1750, about 1.5 km from Horstwalde, there was an ironworks called "Schmelze" founded by Count F.G.Heinrich. In 1858 an iron smelter started work. A potash distillery was also located here. At the end of the 18th century, however, the operation of these plants was stopped again. The brown meadow ore did not prove to be very productive when iron was extracted. Today, unfortunately, nothing is reminiscent of the "melt" - only locals still know its location.

Horstwalde itself includes the main village, the Bombachhaus, the Trompeterhaus, the Forsthaus Wunder and the Horstmühle.

      Traditions and Sights:

In terms of landscape, Horstwalde has a special feature that is unique in Germany. A dune complex with more than 15 nested parabolic dunes is an ideal location for the traffic test facility located there. At the “Open Day” that is taking place, you can, among other things, test the uphill and twisting tracks with your own vehicle. Horstwalde is also an ideal starting point for hikes in the "Schöbendorfer Busch" nature reserve.
