Saalborn was first mentioned in a document in 1136. The name means something like "spring on the reeds." Saalborn was once a forest village with a manor and several farms, with many residents working as day laborers and lumberjacks. The manor included a brewery and an inn, and later a mill. The Goethe Wanderer Church dates back to the 12th century and houses a valuable Romanesque processional cross from this period. The cemetery features a yew tree, which has been a natural monument since 1968 and is considered the largest yew tree in Thuringia. It was probably planted around 1856.
