As a cultural monument, the gate is not only of local historical interest, but also from an architectural point of view. In the city, which is otherwise dotted with many listed buildings, the Köllesturm is one of the few relics of the medieval city wall from the 13th century. After extensive refurbishment, it now shines in new splendor all around: the half-timbering, including its fillings, and the pointed arch passageway have also been extensively refurbished.

The Köllesturm, named after a former tower guard, was once one of two gates in Bönnigheim's city wall. It was built between 1284 and 1286. However, the foundation, which was only 1.40 meters deep, was too weak for the loamy subsoil: over the years, the building had tilted further and further to the side. Statisticians see the stabilization in itself as sufficient to stop the sideways movement.
