Hohenstein Castle is a Renaissance-style castle in Hohenstein in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg.
As early as 1250, a castle in the location of today's castle is mentioned. Castle owners were the lords of Howenstein. After the line died out in 1443, Württemberg took over the village and castle and gave it as a fief to the lords of Sachsenheim. They in turn sold the castle equally to the lords of Talheim and the lords of Lierheim. The lords of Talheim later gave their half to the lords of Winnenden. Already around 1550 the castle is said to have collapsed. In 1555 the ruins fell back to Württemberg, which distributed them to the Lords of Plieningen and the Obervogt von Brackenheim. In 1593 the Plieningen had the castle demolished and instead built a palace on the same spot.
A hundred years later, as a result of the Palatinate War of Succession, the castle was burned down by Ezéchiel de Mélac's troops. However, from 1696 to 1698 it was rebuilt by Maria Magdalena von Gaisberg, born Schertlin von Burtenbach, this time in the Renaissance style, as can be seen from the hipped roof and the Baroque stucco. The destroyed east wing was omitted. Around 1740, the Lords of Schütz-Pflummern bought Hohenstein, but the village and castle had to be sold again due to financial constraints. A few years later, however, the castle was reacquired by the Schütz-Pflummern family.
In 1942 the castle was sold, this time to the NS Women's Association. After the war, Otto Mecheels founded the Hohenstein Institute in 1946, which is still based in Hohenstein Castle today.
