The construction of city walls around Bastogne with a dozen defensive towers and two gates was decided in 1332 by Jean l'Aveugle, Count of Luxembourg and La Roche, King of Bohemia and Poland. These ramparts were built between 1341 and 1360. Of all these fortifications, the Porte de Trèves is the only notorious element still standing. In fact, the city walls were demolished in 1688 by order of the French King Louis XIV. tore off . The Porte de Trèves then becomes a prison. During the Second World War, more precisely during the Siege of Bastogne, in December 1944 and January 1945, the bombardments severely damaged the gate, which was rebuilt after the war.

The Porte de Trèves, a monumental square stone tower which allowed entry into Bastogne, was built in the year 1332, with ramparts. It is to this day one of the last visible evidence of medieval fortifications.

A beautiful city gate made of grey granite, standing isolated in a park.
