The port is the symbol of the maritime and commercial importance of Giulianova. Its birth dates back to Roman times when Castrum Novum, the ancient residential nucleus of the city, still existed. The flourishing trades are testified by the findings of amphorae able to contain the goods but it was also used during the Second Punic War.
In the sixteenth century. there was a strong decline of the Julian port which was even closed.
Fishing and commercial activities restarted only shortly before 1913 when it was also expanded in size.

Close to the "old" port (South pier) which is certainly a fascinating and peaceful place where you can walk and come across the maritime characters who animate the "caliscendi", wooden structures aimed at small-scale fishing.
