On the opposite side of the Holzape lies the deserted village of Markessen. This settlement was inhabited until the 14th century.
From here came u. the robber baron Johannes von Markessen.
Until the beginning of the 14th century he was the lord of the Wülmersen table estate.
A close relative, Reimbold von Markessen, was abbot of the Helmarshausen monastery until around 1330.
