Originally, Rosenheim was divided into the inner and outer market, also known as the Vormarkt. This Vormarkt was divided into various smaller markets, the Eiermarkt (today the Grüner Markt) in the middle, the Schweinemarkt at Färbergasse and the Köstenmarkt along house numbers 28 to 31, i.e. from Schuh Reindl to Gietlhaus. These markets made up today's Ludwigsplatz, which was named after King Ludwig I around 1825. When the street names were renamed and renumbered in 1882, the special names of the individual markets were included in Ludwigsplatz.

The calendar picture shows the view from Kaiserstraße to Ludwigsplatz around 1900. The old Schuhhaus Reindl can be seen on the right. In 1923, the then owner Karl Reindl rebuilt the building after purchasing the neighboring house. To the left of it is the so-called Daumann House, which belonged to the gold and silver worker Xaver Daumann. In 1919 it was purchased by the shoe and leather dealer Alfons Sigl, who owned the small building next door. Sigl wanted to add another floor to his two-story house and create a uniform frontage with the Gietlhaus. However, he was only able to do this in the 1930s. The old fish fountain still stands in front of the Reindl House. In 1868, the old fountain with a statue of the Virgin Mary was demolished. In its place was a fountain with a square base on a two-tiered base. It was made entirely of cast iron, the water flowed in four bowls, and the top was crowned with a flower bowl. The fish market was also held here on Fridays and during Lent, with the well water being used to keep the goods fresh. This gave the fountain the name Fish Fountain. In 1927, Ludwigsplatz was asphalted; the old fish fountain was replaced by a new fountain with a figure and an artistic grille. The only reminder of its old use is the fish in the hand of the fountain figure.

This square was once part of the so-called Outer Market, which was created as a result of the expansion of Rosenheim in the 15th century. However, it has been completely redesigned in recent years, including partially exposing the city stream.

The Fish Fountain, a work by Prof. Albertshofer from 1928, stands out on Ludwigsplatz. It is a reminder that fish used to be sold here. Today a “Green Market” takes place here almost every day.
